A legume genomics resource: The Chickpea Root Expressed Sequence Tag Database Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Jayashree,B; Buhariwalla,Hutokshi K; Shinde,Sanjeev; Crouch,Jonathan H.
Chickpea, a lesser-studied grain legume, is being investigated due to its taxonomic proximity with the model legume genome Medicago truncatula and its ability to endure and grow in relatively low soil water contents making it a model legume crop for the study of agronomic response to drought stress. Public databases currently contain very few sequences from chickpea associated with expression in root tissues. However, root traits are likely to be one of the most important components of drought tolerance in chickpea. Thus, we have generated a set of over 2800 chickpea expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from a library constructed after subtractive suppressive hybridization (SSH) of root tissue from two closely related chickpea genotypes possessing different...

PhenoRoots: an inexpensive non-invasive phenotyping system to assess the variability of the root system architecture Scientia Agricola
Martins,Saulo Muniz; Brito,Giovani Greigh de; Gonçalves,Washington da Conceição; Tripode,Bruna Mendes Diniz; Lartaud,Marc; Duarte,João Batista; Morello,Camilo de Lelis; Giband,Marc.
ABSTRACT: The root system architecture (RSA) of plants and its functioning play a fundamental role in a number of plant growth mechanisms including water and nutrient uptake. Optimization of the RSA is important for stable and increased plant productivity under adverse conditions. Despite its great importance, studying the RSA is notoriously laborious because of the difficulty of accessing the rooting system of plants. We developed a root phenotyping platform, PhenoRoots, which allows for the non-invasive study of plant RSA. The system was built using inexpensive material and was designed to provide medium throughput. Substrate or soil-filled rhizotrons are used to grow plantlets, whose roots are directly visible through a glass plate. An experiment...

ลักษณะของต้นและรากข้าวเพื่อการแข่งขันกับวัชพืช Thai Agricultural
Ronnachai Changsri; Namuco, Ofelia; Johnson, David.
Greenhouse study was conducted at the Weed Science, Crop and Environmental Sciences Division, IRRI in February-April, 2013. The objective was to assess the competitiveness of rice (IR64, Sabita, KDML105, Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea Acc. 105798 (THA)) and six rice progenies derived from a cross between IR64 and Sabita that have high potential for competitiveness against weeds. The six progenies were SB561 (IR88633:1-66-B), SB562 (IR88633:1-67-B), SB604 (IR88633:1-136-B), SB665 (IR88633:1-138-B), SB708 (IR88633:20-69-B) and SB769 (IR88633:12-55-B). We evaluated the competitive ability of these rice genotypes under severe pressure from Echinochloa colona. The experimental design was RCB with 3 replications. Several rice shoot and root traits were...
